DescriptionFrom text: "University of Chicago [i]s located within four miles of the Court House, and on the route of the Cottage Grove horse-cars, within a few steps of the shores of Lake Michigan. It is conducted under the auspices of the Baptist denomination, but is founded on a broad and liberal basis. It is built on a beautiful tract of ground donated by Hon. S. A. Douglas. It was founded in 1855, and the first building erected in 1858. The main central building is 126 x 172 feet, and was completed in 1868, at a cost of $110, 000. It is of Athens marble, and is of very imposing appearance. The property, with endowments, is valued at $400, 000." Note: This school closed in 1886 and was not associated with the University of Chicago later established in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
