Native American Moccasins (pair)
Native American Moccasins (pair)
Resource Typeimage
TitleNative American Moccasins (pair)
Coverage / YearLate 19th century to early 20th century; Central Plains region;
DescriptionMoccasins are footwear made of leather. This pair has soft deerskin uppers and hardened rawhide soles; they are stitched entirely by hand. The uppers are decorated with white, red and blue beads sewn on in geometric patterns. Leather ties around the ankles secured the moccasins.
Interpretation'Moccasin' is the Algonquin word for leather footwear and has come to be used for all soft leather shoes worn by indigenous (native) peoples of North America. Men and women wore identical syles. Moccasins were one of the first art forms that Native Americans sold to non-natives. Women usually were responsible for stretching, cleaning and tanning raw hides. Spanish settlers introduced glass beads to Native Americans in the late 15th century. By the middle of the 19th century, beads had completely replaced porcupine quills, moose hair, and other clay beads as decoration applied to native clothing.
