Aztec limestone plaque
Aztec limestone plaque
TitleAztec limestone plaque
Coverage / Year590
DescriptionPlaque, limestone. Size: 21.25 x 22 inches. From Chincultic, Chiapas.
InterpretationThe band of hieroglyphics around the border of this plaque represents (among other things) a certain day in the year 590 A.D. The figure in the center is a kneeling ballplayer. The headdress worn by the figure was more than likely not worn during the game. Notice the thigh, knee and footpads on the right leg and protective pad on the right arm. The hard ball used in this game was about the size of a child's head and had to be put through stone rings high up on the vertical walls of the ballcourt, using only the player's back and knees.
