Interpretation"As night fell, a drenching rain-storm... commenced. The troops were rapidly fortifying their positions and continued their work until a rude breastwork was constructed. The officers were without tents or food....General Sherman and staff attempted to sleep in a sitting posture wrapt in in their coats and saddle blankets. The wounded and dead were lying in all directions. The battle... [began on] May 25 [and] resulted in a continued skirmish-fire, which was kept up for several days. Intrusive bullets were inconveniently plentiful. Camp-kettles filled with steaming coffee were suddenly emptied into the ashes of the fire. The quiet of the mess-table was invaded by singing Minies that broke the few remaining pieces of crockery belonging to the mess and sent scalding coffee into the wide legs of cavalry boots. Camp-stools that had seen service during long campaigns were splintered by bullet, and fragments of shell." Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. (New York: Dover Publications, 1977), p. xiii.
