DescriptionDrawing by Frederic Remington. Large packs of supplies and goods were carried overland, sometimes for miles, on the backs of the voyageurs, when necessary.
InterpretationThe voyageurs were strong and could carry heavy loads on their backs. They were good at packing their loads so that they were compact and secure. When portage was necessary, they would also have to carry their canoes to the next waterway.
