InterpretationUntil the time of the industrial revolution the horse was the fastest mode of land transporation available. Even at the time of World War I supplies and artillery were most often moved to the lines by horse. Although cavalry was quickly becoming obsolete by the end of the nineteenth century, it was still used in some engagements in World War I, particularly on the eastern front.
